On April 6, 1923, Willie
Sherrill (son-in-law of Ben
Partin) provided ¼ acre of
land deeded to the Rutledge
Hill Community for the
establishment of a church
and Sunday School to be
controlled by the Nazarene
Church.
The deed stated that the
church must be built within
12 months or the deed was
void and reverted to the
original owners.
Records are sketchy, but the
church building was built
within the next 12 months
out of rough sawed lumber.
The original church
apparently had no windows,
ceiling, or doors during the
next 4 years. There are
records of donations and
work to install a ceiling
and windows in 1927 (saw
bill for making benches on
Dec. 1927 for $7.04).
In the early 1950’s, the
Nazarene denomination wanted
control of the property but,
since it was deeded to the
community, they withdrew and
started a church down the
road.
On Oct. 11, 1953, by a
majority vote of 98%, the
Community Church of Rutledge
Hill was established.
